Dolomites Climbing Trip

Sport & Multi-pitch Climbing Trip into the Heart of the Dolomites!

Trip dates: 1-5 July 2023

Join me for an exciting 5-day, 4-night climbing journey through a region rich in history and alpine beauty. The Dolomites are known for dramatic peaks and rock formations, creating the perfect playground for motivated climbers. You will experience fantastic rock climbing and alpine culture in this world-class destination.

Our trip will take us to multiple areas to experience the climbing potential.  The unique geological landscape boasts thousands of documented climbing routes for all grade levels (4b-7+). The Dolomites feature the perfect mix of climbing styles, including:

  • Sport climbing (bolted routes)
  • Traditional or “Trad” routes (not bolted)
  • Multi-pitch routes, both trad and sport

The climbing itinerary and the skills training will adapt to the guest’s experience level to maximize success. Tim will choose different areas to rock climb each day based on the day’s goal. A ground school component will advance your skills and climbing knowledge that can be immediately applied while climbing. I’ve included a suggested climbing program below.

The trip is limited to only two (2) guests, with me as your dedicated guide. That means a lot of individual attention and instruction throughout the trip.

Private accommodation, meals, and transfers around the region are part of the package price. I have a proven track record of creating positive and valuable experiences for my guests, and I will do the same for you.

We’re excited to offer you this incredible opportunity to climb in the Dolomites, and we’re confident you’ll have an unforgettable experience. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and I’ll be happy to assist you.

Climbing Overview

When traveling to a new climbing area, it is essential to create a progression of skills that follows the difficulty and complexity of the climbing. Our team will follow a similar trajectory and build our confidence as the trip progresses. Depending on the experience level of the climbers who join, these lessons will be adjusted to maximize success.  The climbing overview below gives a general sense of such a progression.

Climbing day 1

The goal on the first day is to create a foundation and set the tone of the trip. Our lessons will begin with single-pitch, bolted Sport routes at Cinque Torri. A great area to become familiar with the rock. Essential topics will be discussed and reviewed during ground school to ensure competence and shared understanding. After that, we will go climbing!  Topics include:

  • Lead climbing and lead belaying
  • Rope and equipment considerations
  • Standard communication between partners
  • Belaying from above
  • Making a plan before leaving the ground

When time permits, our lessons could expand into Day 2 topics.

Climbing day 2

After ‘warming up’ on sport climbs, the complexity increases with Traditional Protection (‘Pro’), such as Cams (also called Friends), nuts, and natural protection. Traditional climbing routes do not have bolts. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the lead climber to put or set Pro during a lead climb, a valuable skill for any climber.

A demonstration and discussion about how to place effective Pro will be followed by a practice session. Then we’ll go climbing!

  • Differences between active and passive protection (cams vs. nuts)
  • How to effectively place a piece of Pro
  • Route and Pro considerations
  • “That’s a lot of gear!” How to arrange and manage gear on your harness
  • Dangers and risk considerations
  • Descent Options: rappel or walk-off
  • Making a plan before leaving the ground

Climbing day 3

Building on our previous training, the focus will shift to the committing multi-pitch objectives of the region. Multi-pitch techniques will be demonstrated and practiced on the ground before launching into the vertical world. I’d like you to please apply your newly learned skills as we climb routes ranging between 75-150m.

These routes will test the ability and strength of our team and will require our best effort. It’s an opportunity to solidify your skills and techniques and take your climbing experience to the next level.

Topics include:

  • Route selection for the team
  • Climbing and belaying options for a Party of 2 or 3 climbers
  • belay stand and rope management
  • Time management on route
  • Descent Options: rappel or walk-off
  • Make a Plan Before Leaving the Ground
  • Dangers and risk considerations
  • Daypack essentials for a multi-pitch climb
