Climbing Overview
When traveling to a new climbing area, it is essential to create a progression of skills that follows the difficulty and complexity of the climbing. Our team will take advantage of what the region offers and tailor it to our group.
The climbing overview below gives a general sense of such a progression. Depending on the level of the climbers who join, these lessons can focus more on intermediate to advanced topics, like trad and multi-pitch climbing.
Climbing day 1
The goal on the first day is to create a foundation and set the tone of the adventure. Our lessons will begin on single-pitch, bolted Sport routes. Essential topics will be discussed during ground school and applied on route to ensure competence and shared understanding. Topics include:
When time permits, our lessons could expand into Day 2 topics.
Climbing day 2
After ‘warming up’ on sport climbs, the complexity increases with the introduction of Traditional Protection, known as ‘Pro’ or ‘Gear,’ both active and passive. These two words are used interchangeably in the context of climbing. The day will focus on climbing single-pitch and multi-pitch Traditional or ‘Trad’ routes.
There will be a demonstration and discussion about placing effective Pro followed by a practice session. Trad climbing routes do not have bolts. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the lead climber to put or set Pro during a lead climb, a valuable skill for any climber. Topics include:
Climbing day 3
Building on our previous training, the focus will shift to the committing multi-pitch objectives of the region. Multi-pitch techniques will be demonstrated and practiced on the ground before launching into the vertical world. Apply your newly learned skills as we climb routes that vary in sheer length between 150-300m.
These routes will test the ability and strength of our team and will require our best effort. It’s an opportunity to solidify your skills and techniques and take your climbing experience to the next level.

Upcoming Courses:
30 April- 01 May: Intro to Outdoor Climbing (course 1/2)
14-15 May: Learn to Lead Climbing course (course 2/2)
The course teaches the fundamentals of lead climbing a bolted (sport) route on natural rock and prepares you for a lifetime of climbing and route possibilities. Have you climbed in a gym or had a friend ‘put up the rope’ for you? Now it’s time for you to climb on the ‘Sharp End’ and get the rope up!
You will learn the various techniques and skills needed to climb with a partner successfully. Take the next step in your climbing progression and sign up today!
Curriculum:
This course will build confidence and create an excellent foundation for you as a lead climber. Discover beautiful climbing locations around the Alps and build partnerships with fellow climbers.
What is the difference between Lead climbing and Sport climbing? Sport climbing implies pre-drilled bolts in the rock for clipping quickdraws and a bolted anchor. Lead climbing means the first climber takes the rope up the route, clipping bolts along the way for protection. The lead climber can set up a Top-rope for the 2nd climber or group or simply ‘clean’ the anchor and leave no gear behind.

Multi-pitch climbing is ascending a route that includes one or more stops at belay stands. A climber leads a pitch and then belays their partner up to the belay stand. The climbers can swap roles as lead climber or belayer on every pitch. The process repeats until the route is climbed or the party retreats.
Have you ever seen rock climbers high on a rock face? That’s multi-pitch climbing! Routes can range between 2 and 25+ pitches (50-400m!) with various degrees of difficulty. The vertical world of multi-pitch climbing is exciting and challenging. There are many skills and techniques required for such an undertaking. This course will equip you to accomplish your goals in a multi-pitch setting.
Here are some of the topics covered in this course:
The multi-pitch course is conducted over two days with small group sizes (max. four students) to optimize learning and experience. It includes overnight accommodations with easy access to the climbing areas. If you are ready to climb to the next level, this multi-pitch course is for you.

The Swiss Alps have hundreds of huts with excellent climbing right outside the door. These historical huts offer the opportunity to share in the history, sleep overnight, and connect with other mountain community members. The joy of hiking and reaching your destination is a fantastic feeling. There’s nothing like waking up to a sunrise in the Alps.
Hut destinations vary with the guest and climbing goals of the trip in mind. Hiking to any particular hut can range from 1-3 hours. Once we arrive at the hut and drop off our bags, we can get to the fun of climbing fantastic rock formations in the alpine enviroment.
What kind of climbing is possible around the huts? Climbing styles include top-rope climbing, lead sport climbing, and multi-pitch routes. Our guides will create a custom plan for the team to maximize fun and success.
The geology of the alpine enviroments is just incredible. Rock types include Granite, limestone, and gneiss (depending on region). Each type of stone offers a different climbing experience and requires the climber to adapt. There’s a lifetime of climbing fun waiting for you on the rock towers and walls of the Swiss Alps.

Have you ever looked up in the mountains and seen rock climbers high on a rock face? That’s multi-pitch rock climbing! Routes can range between 2 and 25+ pitches (50-400m!) with various degrees of difficulty. The vertical world of multi-pitch climbing is exciting and challenging and requires knowledge.
Multi-pitch climbing is ascending a route that includes one or more stops at belay stands. A pitch is from one belay stand to the next. Tim will lead a pitch, while the 2nd climber lead-belays them. When he reaches the next belay stand, he belays the 2nd climber up. The process repeats until the route is climbed or the party retreats.
The best route for the team is carefully hand-picked by considering important factors like skill level, time available, weather, motivation level, etc. There is a route for everyone, even beginners!
Before leaving the ground and during the climb, your guide will instruct you on performing specific tasks and movements and provide words of encouragement. You are sure to learn a lot from experience. Oh! The views and photo opportunities are just incredible.

“Tim took me up a multi-pitch climb up the side of the Stockhorn in Switzerland – and it was awesome!! I have a couple of years of experience in climbing single-pitch and a couple of multi-pitch routes, and to be able to go up with someone like Tim was very beneficial to me. I told him about my previous climbing experience, and he picked a route that challenged me but did not overwhelm me. The best part of my experience (if I had to choose just one thing) would be that Tim also taught me a lot of rope management skills and tips and tricks that help with efficiency while on the route. I had an absolute blast and am looking forward to the next adventure with Tim!” -Josh Cooper, Germany.

Discovering Life Adventure Guiding has hugely impacted my life. Tim’s enthusiasm for everything outdoors is truly infectious. Over 3 days, Tim guided me across high mountain passes, up and over rock ledges and across a magnificently deep blue lake. I’m already looking forward to my next guided trip with Tim!
Tyler Fullford – Australia
Tim led me down on my first winter alpine abseil and continues to guide me on how to love, appreciate, and respect all that the mountains have to offer. Thanks for the adventures, Tim.
Michael Moak – Germany
I have had the best experience with Life Adventure Guiding. I have been to many hiking places before but going to Switzerland with this company was an extraordinary experience. Thank you so much!!

Tim took me up a multipitch climb up the side of the Stockhorn in Switzerland – and it was absolutely awesome!! I have a couple years experience in climbing with mostly single pitch and a couple multipitch routes, and to be able to go up with someone like Tim was very beneficial to me. I told him my previous climbing experience, and about the level that I was climbing at, and he picked a route that challenged me, but did not overwhelm me. I think the best part of my experience (if I had to choose just one thing) would be that Tim also taught me a lot of rope management skills, and tips and tricks that help with efficiency while on the route (like clipping all gear to a single sling when cleaning on a route, and then passing that to your partner, instead of singly passing over a bunch of draws). I had an absolute blast, and am looking forward to the next adventure with Tim!
